The new Quang Ninh International Airport is located in Van Don Island site about 50 km northeast of Ha Long City. The new airport is part of Quang Ninh Province’s drive to promote ecotourism at Ha Long Bay which is a UNESCO’s world heritage site.
The Terminal Building is planned as a 2-level processing facility comprising of a main building served by an elevated departure road and the arrival road at ground level on the landside. On the airside, the main building is connected to a 2-level concourse, which is served by 3 contact gates. The Terminal Building is set to provide world-class facilities with the initial capacity of 2.5 million passengers per annum up to Year 2020. The future expansion of the Terminal Building to 5 million passengers per annum has been safeguarded.
The architectural design of the passenger terminal is inspired by the magnificent limestone outcrops and the numerous sailboats that dot Ha Long Bay. The reference to the sails and the outcrops are clearly expressed in the assembly of the upturned roof at the kerbside, where the articulation of the struts and ties and their projection from the pier-like feature columns is an interpretation of the scenic beauty of Ha Long Bay. The use of sail-like, light-weight and overlapping roofs continue over the airside concourse, allowing daylight to penetrate from between the overlaps. The Terminal Building will be light-filled and airy and finished with materials well-suited to the climate, to evoke a tropical resort-like feel.
